Red-tailed Black
These slow-flying black birds are about two feet in length. Despite their size, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are difficult to see among shadowed eucalyptus trees.
These birds are part of a flock we saw foraging in the eucalyptus forests of Kakadu National Park.
Red-tailed Blacks feed on seeds, nuts, and fruits of eucalyptus trees.
This male Red-tail displays his crest. As the flock forages on the ground, the birds in the trees periodically make contact calls to communicate with each other.
As male Red-tailed Black Cockatoos land, they display their stunning red tails.
